Home Builders Bulletin

Happy Friday!  After casting a weather eye toward thousands of his faithful followers this past Saturday, the 2nd of February, Punxsutawney Phil rose to the call and pointed his handlers to the appropriate scroll, which proclaimed:

"As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me. Six more weeks of winter it will be!"

  • Good News!  We won a big victory in the Supreme Court on the 5th!  The following paragraph is an excerpt from an email I received from Lee Schwartz of the MAHB.  I have the full ema il that I will be happy to forward if you would like to read the entire article.

    • SUPREME COURT AGREES WITH MAHB ON ASSESSMENT CASE, Public Service Improvements Cannot Increase Assessment.  The Michigan Supreme Court issued its opinion in the Toll Northville appeal on February 5, 2008.  I am pleased to advise that the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, affirmed and adopted the position taken by MAHB in this appeal. A builder’s property taxes on a development cannot be increased based on the cost of public service improvements.  The Supreme Court found that the value for public service improvements would be incorporated into the value of each individual home at the time it is built or sold.

  • Michigan Works is having a career fair on Tuesday, March 25th at the Michigan Works office in Benton Harbor.  Michigan Works is a non-profit organization that helps both employers & employees alike.  There is no charge for employers wanting to have a presence.  Anyone interested can call 1-800-533-5800.

  • “Make a Date with a Builder” is two weeks away!  Due to time constraints, we only have room for 11 associate members to meet with the builders!  Tile Mart, Meridian Title, Louck’s Concrete Specialists, Yeo & Yeo, River Valley Kitchens, Aim Water, Edgewater Bank & Pella Windows are the  associates I currently have signed up, so if you do not see your name here and wish to participate I need you to call or email to RSVP.  There are still a couple of spaces available, so get your RSVP’s in today!  If this event goes over well, I will revamp the format to allow for more time, so more associate members can participate!

  • We are looking for volunteers for the Home, Garden & Leisure Show.  Volunteers will either help with set up/take down, or man admissions or our booth, where we will be selling raffle tickets for our Harley-Davidson.

  • The Kalamazoo Home Builders Assoc. is holding an educational course called Construction Contracts & Law on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 8am – 4 pm.  Course will be held at the Kalamazoo HBA office located at 5700 W. Michigan Ave., Kalamazoo.    This course counts towards National Association of Home Builders Designations:  CGA, CGB, CGR and Continuing Education Credits for: CAPS, CGA, CGB, CGR, GMB, CSP, Master CSP, CMP, MIRM.  You can get more details at www.kalamazoohomepage.com, or contact me and I will forward the flyer that was sent to me.

  • Does anyone know anything about slide shows and what materials are needed? We have tons of pictures from past SWMHBA events, and I would like to put together slide shows to run during our general membership meetings.  The St. Joseph Elks Club has a nice screen, but no equipment.
